AFP SURVEILLANCE

Tanzania has the last case of WPV in July 1996 in Southern part of the country. There is NO cVDPV that has been reported

The Non Polio AFP rate has been persistent above 2 per 100,000 children below 15 years for the past 3 years with stool adequacy rate being above 80%.  Community Based Surveillance is done in Tanzania in those districts with Community Health Workers through Community IMCI. However, no impact assessment has been done so far.  In-depth Surveillance review was done in July 2015 which showed significant progress made as far as surveillance is concerned.

In response to asylum seekers in the western part of the country, communication plan is in place where health information team members are trained and disseminate health information to their fellow asylum seekers; also asylum community leaders are engaged and oversee the performance of health information team members.

Outbreak preparedness plan is available and is updated regularly. For the 2015 WPV outbreak preparedness plan will focus on the Influx of asylum seekers in western border of the country as well as AFP cases with Zero doses.

The following strategies are included in the plan

  • Carrying out regular risk analysis
  • Review of AFP Surveillance data weekly
  • Supporting low performing districts on RI through REC
  • Advocacy on importation risk at all levels
  • Strengthening acute flaccid paralysis surveillance at all levels.
